Wheel-thrown ceramics · since 2011
Tsuchiya is a small studio on a quiet lane in Yanaka, old Tokyo. We throw tableware and tea ware on a single wheel, glaze it in ash and celadon, and fire it a few dozen pieces at a time. Nothing here is made to be looked at from a shelf — it's made to be used.

The studio has been in the same two-room machiya since 2011. Clay is wedged by hand, thrown in the morning light, trimmed when leather-hard, and glazed in batches small enough to remember each piece.
We keep to a short list of forms we've spent years refining — a rice bowl, a tea cup, a plate that stacks — rather than chasing something new every season.
What we make
Rice bowls, noodle bowls and stacking plates in ash-grey and warm white, sized for the hand and the cupboard.
Teacups, yunomi and small pots glazed in celadon, with a foot trimmed to sit true on the table.
Matched sets for a home or a small restaurant, thrown to an agreed form over a few firings.
